Climate-resilient agri solutions discussed at AgroSpectrum Asia portal launch

Dr Trilochan Mohapatra, Chairperson, of the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers Rights Authority (PPVFRA), emphasised the importance of applying D precision agriculture and genomics technology for climate-resilient agricultural practices in India. He made this statement during a panel discussion on 'Climate-resilient agriculture technologies and approaches in Asia,' held in conjunction with the launch event of the agrospectrumasia.com portal organised by AgroSpectrum.

Dr Mohapatra emphasised that mainstreaming genetically modified (GM) crops would be beneficial for farmers. Agriculture continues to be a crucial economic activity in India and Asia, with the overall economy of the country reaping the benefits. Over 50 per cent of the population relies on agriculture for their livelihoods, leaving them with limited alternatives Given these circumstances, there is a substantial responsibility, particularly considering that 85 per cent of farmers are marginal farmers. This responsibility becomes even more challenging in the face of climate change.

He further said that rising temperatures, which have nearly doubled, are significantly impacting agriculture. It is a particularly challenging situation for vulnerable farmers who possess limited resources. However, these farmers are resilient and are working hard to manage these conditions. Efforts have been made to address the negative impacts of climate change in the agricultural sector. Through the use of technology, climate change challenges can be mitigated. In recent years, 1300 to 1400 varieties of crops have been developed of which 1200 varieties are climate resilient. Additionally, hundreds of GM crop varieties have been developed. Mainstreaming GM crop varieties can contribute to addressing climate change, but further testing is required for adaptation. Dr Mohapatra stressed the importance of partnerships in this context.
