X FACTOR

The Scrambler 400X promises to offer what the Speed 400 seems to lack - that coveted X factor. But is that enough for it to be favoured over its twin?

X FACTOR

As an owner and a self-proclaimed fan of Triumph Motorcycles, I was naturally excited when the company introduced the Speed 400. A middle weight roadster with impeccable dynamics, comfortable ride experience, and, of course, top-notch Triumph quality parts – what more could one ask for? In short, it’s bloody good.

However, after the initial thrill of my first ride settled, I could feel all my excitement wane. True, it’s competitively priced and does everything, and rather well, that you ask of it, but nothing more. You want a proper street weapon? The Duke 390 is a better option. What about more features? Well, the Apache RTR 310 will definitely serve you better. More power? The Interceptor 650 has you covered.

What I am getting at is that the Speed 400 definitely gets the job done but lacks the ‘X factor’ that would make it truly exceptional. Interestingly, Triumph Motorcycles also showcased another 400cc motorcycle alongside the Speed 400 – the Scrambler 400X.

DESIGN & DIMENSIONS

It’s the front end of the 400X that features most of the design differences and highlights – for instance, the 19-inch alloy wheel, larger 32-inch discs, headlight guard, hand guards, radiator guard, and bash plate. The front is beefier and more muscular than that of the Speed and definitely looks the part. In fact, novice enthusiasts may find it quite difficult to distinguish it from the Scrambler 900. What’s more, all the aforementioned accessories are standard, which means that you don’t have to pay a penny more for them. The package also includes the handlebar cross brace, which minimizes vibrations from the handlebars, especially while navigating over rough terrains.
