This 'side project' began in October 2022, when then editor Mikko Nieminen handed me the keys to BMW's excellent F900 XR to run as a long-termer for MSL, a very real contrast to my usual sportsbike discipline that I had been covering for Fast Bikes magazine for the last 10-plus years. Little did I know that this was not merely a game changer, but more a life-changing experience discovering a whole new world of motorcycling that had not completely alluded me, but I certainly had not embraced it.
A lot has changed since then. Mikko has become Dave who I have to thank for keeping this experience in his pages; I have worn a helmet with a peak for the last 11 months and replaced my RST leathers for Rukka Textiles; and the BMW F900 XR engine is now wowing the BSB grid with one of the most exciting support race series we have seen in recent times. The most significant action, however, was when I reticently dropped the XR back at BMW, got a taxi up the road to Yamaha HQ and boarded the Ténéré 700.
