LIGHTS IN HIDING
CAR South Africa|September 2022
Automotive parts giant Magna is showcasing a new technology capable of integrating a vehicle's external lighting into its bodywork.

LIGHTS IN HIDING

Dubbed "Ligate", the system involves a process where LED lighting elements are affixed to a thermoplastic surface before being primed and painted. The areas where light must shine through are treated with laser ablation, which drills microscopic holes through the paint and primer layers, leaving the plastic and surrounding paint intact. Essentially, it allows light to shine through body panels when activated and seemingly disappear when switched off. The technology is currently being showcased in non-functional lighting (logos, communications) but has been deemed feasible for brakelamps, indicators and reverse lights. In addition to affording car designers even greater latitude with regard to their creations, Ligate encourages the increased use of energy-efficient LED lighting while accommodating more aerodynamic designs otherwise pockmarked by lighting ports in the bodywork. According to Magna, Ligate will become commercially available in 2023, pending uptake from manufacturers.
