In our preview drive of the updated H6 in the August 2025 issue, Haval outlined its commitment to staying ahead of established South African rivals.

This is especially evident in the firm's midsize-SUV portfolio, where virtues such as styling, good build quality, practical packaging, impressive driving manners and an expanding after-sales support promise seem to be holding true. What we certainly weren't expecting was GWM's first foray into the performance-SUV segment.

But that's been the promise of the H6 GT ever since it launched in South Africa three years ago. The sleek, fastback styling of the GT was a first for the brand as we knew it, and this new variant also came equipped with a 2.0-litre turbopetrol four-cylinder that made 155 kW and 325 N.m of torque. While certainly sporty, the GT's outputs were more hot-hatch than outright performance SUV.

Now, the H6 GT's initial promise has been fulfilled by the adoption of a plugin hybrid model that sits atop the H6 range and makes a formidable 321 kW and 762 N.m of torque thanks to its 1.5-litre, four-cylinder turbopetrol engine that's supplemented by twin electric motors (front and rear).
