It's lost none of its rugged appeals, though, yet it feels more sophisticated on the move, and its roomy interior looks smart and features all the tech you'll need. Better still, the prices of used examples have now dropped to below £10,000.

has come on leaps and bounds in the last few years, with the brand's mix of low prices and a long warranty earning it lots of new fans. The HS is the firm's flagship, and while it still feels off the pace in terms of driving dynamics and interior quality, it offers a lot of space and loads of kit for not much cash. There's even a plug-in hybrid that'll do 32 miles in EV mode.
