Another forgotten wildlife community is the native freshwater fishes of India. The author urges us to take a look.
Freshwater FISHING

India boasts a remarkable array of freshwater fish species, residing in its rivers, lakes, and wetlands. From the snow-fed Himalayan rivers in the north to the tropical backwaters of the south, the country's aquatic ecosystems host an incredible diversity of fish. India's freshwater habitats are home to over 877 identified fish species, representing various families and ecological niches.

These species encompass a wide range of forms, sizes, and adaptations, from the elusive Mahseer (Hypselobarbus mussullah) to the colourful labyrinth fish (Trichogaster lalius), from the predatory snakeheads to the playful barbs. Each species has its unique characteristics, behaviours, and ecological roles, contributing to the delicate balance of the aquatic ecosystems they inhabit.

In the world of native fish conservation, enthusiasts like Aravind Manoj are playing a crucial role in raising awareness about the beauty and importance of India's native fish species. Aravind, hailing from Chennai, has dedicated himself to exploring and photographing these fascinating creatures. His passion for native fishes has led him on a captivating journey through rivers, streams, and diverse aquatic habitats. In this article, we delve into Aravind's experiences, his efforts to conserve native fishes, and the challenges he faces along the way.

Aravind's fascination with native fishes began during his childhood in Chennai. With a deep interest in the diversity of aquatic life, he eagerly examined the catch of fellow fishermen. As he grew, his enthusiasm for discovering various fish species grew stronger. During the early days, Beta Mahatvaraj assisted him in identifying fish. With the help of his friend Sudharshan Kuselan, he honed his photography skills and captured stunning images of these remarkable creatures.
