Donate An Organ, Gift A Life

Frankly until I myself underwent a heart transplant, I did not know the value of organ donation. Even though I was 69 and had worked as an academician for 45 years, I was only vaguely aware of the need to do so. If such was my level of awareness one can understand the lack of confusion at large. The waiting list for donor organs in the world as on 16th January 2019 was 113,000. Although, the percentage of awareness has increased, the gap between the required number and actual donors is huge. In America, while 95 per cent wish to donate, only 56 per cent do so. The number of organ donors in India is less than 0.34 per cent per million.

Organ transplants can save patients from end stage dialysis, diabetes, coronary diseases, lung failure, cyrrhosis, eliminate bone cancer and blindness.

The benefit of organ transplant to the patient is immediate. It saves a life and cures an incurable disease. One kidney can rescue one from the tyranny of dialysis, half a pancreas from diabetes, a heart and lung from heart and lung failure or coronary disease. A liver donor can rid one of liver cirrhosis, a blind person can get back sight with a cornea, a dumb person can get back his or her voice with a donor larynx. Skin tissue transplants can cure deep burns and scars, while bone tissues can eliminate different bone cancers.
