Matrimonial frauds.
A woman in Harinagar locality of Delhi hanged herself to death because her husband did not pick up her phone on karva chauth. 37-year-old Anita had tied the knot three years ago with one Kumar Sambhav, who migrated to the USA after just 15 days of their marriage. Since then, Anita has been observing karva chauth fast every year and this year too she was observing fast for her NRI husband. At the time of breaking her fast, Anita called Kumar several times but he did not pick up the phone even once. Hurt by her husband’s negligence, Anita hanged herself the very next day.
Women in many countries including India have been and still are falling prey to marriages with grooms settled or working abroad. Longing for a better life and getting a chance to settle in foreign countries are two deadly baits that these women and their family members find too tempting to resist. The father of Anita in the above cited case is working at the Union finance ministry, but most of the girls, who fall in the NRI trap, mainly come from middle-class families living in small towns and cities.
Earlier, marriage whether within India or abroad used to be fecilitated by familial friends, pundits or the acquaintances and there were little chances of fraud. Moreover, women were less inclined to weddings with NRI grooms. Of late, wedding has become a flourishing business and now more and more women are eager to settle in foreign lands. Tying the knot with a man settled or working abroad is a sure and certain passport to settle in a foreign country.
