Rain wasn’t in the plans when Nicola McDermott began pulling together her dream wedding to fiance Rhys Olyslagers. But the Aussie athlete, who won the silver medal in the women’s high jump at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, says the constant showers only served to make the day more memorable.
“Everything that I had envisioned for my wedding day – a beautiful outdoor ceremony with a scenic outlook – had to be changed but I feel like people got closer because it was raining,” the 25-year-old bride tells Woman’s Day. “Everyone was able to enjoy each other’s company more and it was so magical and special regardless.”
The couple’s plan B saw them exchange vows inside their reception marquee as the rain poured down at the stunning Silos Estate vineyard in Berry on the NSW South Coast on April 7.
“It’s not one that people will forget,” Nicola says of the afternoon ceremony, attended by 110 guests.
