Hollywood legend Marilyn Monroe's life has been dissected for decades with dozens of conspiracy theories about her untimely death and wild rumours about her career and love affairs. A new Netflix documentary, The Mystery Of Marilyn Monroe: The Unheard Tapes, and an upcoming biopic, Blonde, have led to even more interest in the superstar who died 60 years ago on August 4, 1962, at just age 36. Here, we uncover some surprising revelations about Marilyn.
1 SHE WAS DISCOVERED AT A WWII FACTORY
Known then as Norma Jean Dougherty and newly married to Marine Jim Dougherty, 19-year-old Marilyn was working at the Radioplane Munitions Factory when army photographer David Conover "discovered" her in late 1944. David saw the curly-haired brunette had potential, and several months later Marilyn signed up to a model agency.
2 SHE WAS HAUNTED BY HER MOTHER'S ILLNESS
Marilyn's mother Gladys Pearl Baker suffered a breakdown when Marilyn was eight and then spent the rest of her life in and out of psychiatric institutions after being diagnosed with schizophrenia. Marilyn was always fearful that she would follow her path and struggled with depression, anxiety and addiction throughout her life.
