Golden Retriever
Gentle and even-tempered, these mellow fellows are much-loved family pets. Historically, they were used as gun dogs and can still be found working on grouse shoots. They are in the Guinness World Records too – one is listed as having the loudest bark, at 113.1 decibels, the other has the record for holding the most tennis balls in its mouth (six)!
Dachshund
‘A house is not a home without a dachshund,’ declared Queen Victoria, who had a palace full of these compact canines. Despite their dinky size, they are feisty and determined, a throwback to their badger-hunting origins. With their endearing looks, it’s no surprise that several have huge Insta followings. But don’t be fooled by those soulful eyes – these are vocal, independent dogs that need plenty of walks and play.
French Bulldog
At the beginning of 2020, this cute breed was top of the list of puppies registered with The Kennel Club. The ultimate celebrity companion – Madonna, Hugh Jackman and Reese Witherspoon (below, with her pooch, Pepper) all own Frenchies – this lapdog has irresistible features: saucer eyes, a squishy face and trademark bat ears.
