Every time my youngest slopes downstairs and hovers in the doorway of the living room, I know exactly what he’s going to ask me. ‘Can I have £3 of my pocket money please?’. He wants it to buy equipment for his character on one of his online games – a complete waste of money, yet I’ll say nothing and give him the money anyway.

It’s not until his brother, 14, pops to the shop and treats himself to sweets that my youngest realises he may not have spent it the best way.
