I miss our sex life

Q My husband passed away due to COVID in spring this year, so this is my first Christmas alone. I miss him so much – his friendship, his company, his affection – and I miss our lovemaking. I’m due to spend Christmas with my lovely daughter and her fiancé. But I’m starting to realise that I’m going to get upset when I see their obvious physical affection. It’s so embarrassing, and I don’t want to stop them being affectionate with each other just because of me. How can I stop myself from feeling like this?

SUSAN SAYS

A I think it’s moving, rather than embarrassing, that you miss making love with your husband. And my guess is your daughter will understand that, because she and her fiancé also value the sexual aspects of their relationship. So why not be upfront with her about your emotions? Why not admit you miss the sexual side of your marriage. Then, you and she can comfort each other over the loss you’ve both suffered this year.

He won’t accept the COVID-19 vaccine

Q My husband of 40 years is convinced that the COVID-19 vaccine will kill us, if not when we get it then in a few years’ time when everyone who got vaccinated will die. He has said he doesn’t know what he’d do to me if I accept it. Now our son is making plans to bring our grandchildren to see us at Christmas and it’s no longer just my life on the line but also theirs. I know if my son knew his dad had refused it he wouldn’t come. I don’t know what to do.
