‘The job market is changing – you’re not going to stay in the same job for decades like your parents did. In fact, you’re probably going to have multiple careers, not just multiple jobs.’ These were the words of a career consultant sent to prepare my Matric cohort for the outside world, shortly before our valedictory in 2008. This was before I’d heard the word ‘millennial’, and the same year as the global financial crash. A decade later, this prediction has come true: people are changing jobs more than ever. A 2018 Deloitte survey of millennials from 36 countries found that ‘Among [this age group], 43% envision leaving their jobs within two years, and only 28% seek to stay beyond five years.’ However, while we’re upskilling at a previously unheard of rate in order to change jobs more frequently, we haven’t yet mastered the essential art of quitting successfully.
