Is erectile dysfunction preventing you from bringing your A-game to the bedroom? Then, it’s time to take action and get to the root of the problem.
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the persistent inability to attain and maintain an erection enough to perform sexual intercourse. When a man is sexually aroused, the muscles in his penis relax. This allows for increased blood flow through the penile arteries, which then fill two chambers inside the penis. As this happens, the penis grows hard. An erection ends when the muscles contract and the blood in the chambers flows out through the penile veins. But besides the ability to perform sexual intercourse, a benefit of an erection is that it results in an influx of oxygen-rich blood and nutrients. These contribute to the developing and maintaining of healthy tissue.
According to Tumi Motsei, men’s health section manager at Pharma Dynamics, an estimated 40% of South African men suffer from ED. This means not being able to have an erection occasionally is normal (such as when under stress). But ED is presented by a regular failure to perform, and can be a sign of underlying health issues. Tumi explains that the average age affected is from 40 years upwards, but the problem can also begin at an early age.
