Travelling on a budget doesn’t have to be a cheap experience.
It is almost mid-2017, and you’re caught between the memory of how great your December break was, and the fantasy of your next year-end adventure. But, are your finances in order? Money does not need to be the storm cloud that spoils your holiday. Yes, there are plenty of ways to have a ball, on a budget, locally and internationally.
Ask any tourist and they’ll tell you that South Africa is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. South African Tourism has a programme called Sho’t Left. It encourages the locals to stay within the borders and explore the amazing diversity that the country has to offer. Think beyond Cape Town, Joburg and Durban. South Africa has the magnificence of the Garden Route, the star-studded solitude of the Northern Cape or the breathtaking mountains of Mpumalanga and the Drakensberg. You’ll be spending less, supporting the local economy and seeing sights that people travel from around the world to witness. Ana Smith, marketing manager for STA Travel, suggests trying out a local road trip. “Consider services such as Baz Bus (bazbus.co.za), a hop- on, hop-off door-to-door backpacker bus service,” she says. Travelling by road gives you a chance to take in the sights – you’ll discover amazing things at the most unexpected stops.
