They affect up to 10 million South Africans and an estimated 20% of the global population, according to the Migraine World Summit, held earlier this year. It also noted that migraines are under-diagnosed, under-treated and under-funded disorders experienced by a billion people worldwide, and that headache-related illnesses take a huge toll on production and the economy. Additionally, the Journal of Headache and Pain states that migraines affect more women than men. This is due to women’s natural hormonal fluctuations.
