I grew up in Dube, Soweto, during a time when violent  riots against apartheid were widespread.

I loved to play soccer on the streets with my friends. But, I recall feeling sad when my parents told me to stop playing outside because of the ongoing violence. I was still a child, and didn’t understand what was happening. I was just preoccupied with playing soccer with a tattered ball. Apart from the violence, I had a happy childhood under my parents’ strict guidance.
