The arrival of teenagers into my life has caused something of a disturbance. The rooms are messier, the chatter noisier, the pantry emptier and the boys’ showers longer and more frequent. So much so that recently I received a phone call from our water service provider worried that the increase in consumption was due to a leak. Well, it is, of sorts …
The doorbell heralding the arrival of more teenage friends for “a gath” triggers me, knowing they’ll leave a path of destruction in almost every nook and cranny that only I seem to remediate. My blood pressure rises with each verse from an inappropriate, misogynistic, politically (and oft grammatically) incorrect rap song booming from the speakers. The neighbours must hate us. I hate us.
