SUMMER BRIDE 2.0

It’s obvious that individuality goes into bridal couture today—silhouettes are both timeless and trending; necklines both high and low; palettes both striking and subdued; jewellery both precious and semi-precious. But just as spring springs, a consensus of sorts begins to emerge. Heavy textiles are (occasionally) optional. And the thought of flowers? Groundbreaking! This season, you might be forgiven for thinking spring/summer 2021 collections would be something of a sombre squib. Far from it, actually. A joyful patchwork of colours and crafts define the season’s resilient spirit, nudging you to put a pause on dreading dull forecasts and focus on the brighter days ahead. Here are the biggest trends wedding wardrobe-wise.

Sorbet SHADES

Sumptuous saccharine shades are the new red… be it lavender, ivory, icy blue or petal pink. Colour enthusiast or colour shy, how can someone resist the soft, sensual colours? A pastel bridal outfit can render itself to any style and setting. Whether you are a minimalist or maximalist, you can wear sugary colours to a quintessential spring garden wedding or a daytime temple ceremony just as effortlessly as you can opt for them at your sangeet soirée. Everyone from Manish Malhotra to Shehla Khan, revisited pretty with pastels for their spring/summer 2021 collections that, thankfully, aren’t too jejune. Malhotra’s Nooraniyat outing is developed on the ethos of tradition but influenced by the new world's present— think classic-meets-contemporary lehengas, gowns, shararas and kurtas in lemons, greys and old rose pinks. In deference to the updated priorities of the pandemic-era bride, the ensembles in Natasha Dalal’s Into The Light line assume a lighter note too, but with a mélange of intricate craftsmanship techniques. Shehla Khan’s range sees Chantilly lace playing a starring role. Aisha Rao’s Pastiche Edit II urges brides to seek refuge in beige, but giving it a summer treatment with vibrant floral threadwork.

This season the red palette is no longer limited to the main walk down the aisle. It serves as the license to play with contemporary classics for various occasions on the wedding itinerary. The collections by designers JADE by Monica and Karishma and Manish Malhotra serve testimony. The anarkali from the former’s Summer Memoir line makes for the perfect cocktail-ready silhouette. The ensemble is accentuated with tone-on-tone work, a JADE signature technique displaying a stunning interplay between fabric and embroidery of just one palette. Malhotra’s red lehenga comprising a sleeveless blouse and voluminous skirt, enhanced with different craftsmanship techniques in gold, would be a scene-stealer at a sangeet.

BRIDAL RED

Colour can concisely construe the mood of a wedding season (or generations!). But as with most designers’ new bridal collection, red posits itself as a starting point, a symbolic ground zero. They remaster and reinvent it in so many silhouettes and in so many ways—in silk, khadi, chiffon, velvet. Layered looks of ruby, cherry, scarlet, garnet, merlot, maroon, crimson… you get the drift. Then there’s the very specific sindoori red that’s coveted by brides everywhere including celebrities Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone on their respective special occasions—the Sabyasachi red. The designer’s latest 2021 couture outing, too, is populated with a roster of red lehengas, kurtas and saris. You’ll see head-to-toe red outfits, red fl orals and some colour-blocked creations with jewel tones, which retain the quintessential bridal palette’s status as a firm-favourite for warm-weather weddings.
