You learn more by guiding. I was a poor postgrad when I started guiding, so what was exciting was to get paid to go to Pompeii and these places that I was studying. But what I loved about it is that I learned as much as they did. But as I’ve gotten older, what inspires me is to not just be there as the expert, but to be there with people. It’s more like, “Let’s explore this together.”
