Manohar Parrikar - My Friend And Foe!

I met Manohar Parrikar somewhere around the year 1994 when he came to see me regarding his candidature for the North Goa Parliamentary seat that he was contesting. I guess that is the only election that he ever lost, winning all others that came his way, albeit via the Panjim Assembly Constituency. He was undoubtedly a colossus that walked the “mati” of Goa, virtually unchallenged, and yes, he drove fear and awe amongst his friends as well as his foes.

When he first became Chief Minister , Goa was fed up of the constant bickering that took place within the Congress which led to myriad elements becoming Chief Ministers through the years. In Manohar, people saw hope; a young dynamic and handsome man with a genial smile was the toast of Goa, and yes, he delivered in his first term. Public administration improved dramatically, there was order in government departments, IFFI brought tremendous zeal across the capital city of Panjim, a new energy permeated Goa like never before.
