The sundarbans covers 10,000 sq km of land and water in the Ganges delta and contains the world’s largest spread of mangrove forests. Its beauty lies in the thousands of meandering streams, creeks, rivers and estuaries that enhance its charm and in the birds and animals that live there. The ‘beautiful forest’ is the natural habitat of the Royal Bengal Tiger and its rivers are combed by the 18 tides or atharo bhati that rule the lives of all those who live here. This tiger-haunted place is protected by Bon Bibi, the goddess with a Muslim name who with her brother Shah Jongoli were sent from Mecca to guard the forests against Dokkhin Rai, the demon spirit who ruled in the form of a tiger.
