Spend evenings under the stars in San Miguel de Allende.
TIM LEFFEL

San Miguel de Allende in central Mexico frequently tops magazine readers’ polls as one of the best cities in the world. Its colorful houses, cobblestone streets, and UNESCO World Heritage historic center make it a perfect destination for the Instagram age. The foreign retirees who settled here are now joined by the young and cool visiting from urban Mexico, so there’s a nice mix of options after the sun goes down.

THE BREAKERS PALM BEACH

ARRIVAL/CHECK-IN: We arrived at 1 p.m. and were greeted by the valet team, who introduced themselves and took our bags. The front desk team were enthusiastic, and in a short time we were in our beautiful room, where a cold bottle of Champagne and some delicious chocolates greeted us. The bellman supplied some information, and we were ready to sit on the deck and look out at the beach and ocean. The view was expansive and soothing.

Crane's Beach House

Guest Quarters: A few hours before I checked in, I received a text message that Crane’s Beach House had an opening, and I was upgraded to its luxury villa. Needless to say, I was eager to see what awaited behind the doors of Villa No. 7; the door, by the way, was sealed with a “sanitized and sealed” sticker, and I later found the same sticker sealing the refrigerator door and toilet as well.

LESSONS FROM LUIS THE MONEY LAUNDERER

What drives one to cross continents the hard way? Is this what Overlanding is about? That persistent feeling that we'll never be caught if nothing can catch us? The optimist in me sure hoped that was the case. And after riding a battered old KLR650 35,000km from Canada to the southern tip of South America I'm still unsure what the purpose or motivation was. Worthwhile? Absolutely. Why? No idea.

Ana Leovy – Confetti in Cancún

Ana Leovy’s glass is half full, effervescent with bubbles, ready to toast the day and share the good news. Maybe on a solo stroll, maybe with friends and neighbors, the message is clear in her ripe gouache and acrylic pictures. Follow the light like a sunflower, lounge proud with purpose. A tropical storm delayed our conversation, but didn’t dampen her spirits.
