Manipur Wuyawon - Caressed By The Clouds

ACCORDING TO a legend of Shingcha Village, Maphat was a brave warrior who beheaded many opponents during wars. This brave legend is believed to have lived in the early 19th century, in the days where heads were prized as war trophies and he preferred to venture alone on his missions. During one such mission, he had to halt for a night on his way home at the peak of a hill as it was already very late. He was tired after the long journey carrying his war trophies but could not get a wink of sleep. However, he stayed because he was too worn out and from there on the peak came to be known as Wuya Kachui (‘Wuya’ which means restless due to nightmare and ‘Kachui’ means peak). According to the legend, Maphat had taken many heads of those in the Sihai Khullen village in many of his raids and was eventually killed by the warriors of Sihai Khullen during one of his missions at the village.
