MONSOON IN MUMBAI

You have to be slightly crazy to want to stand at the edge of a seaside promenade that’s about to be hit by a 20ft unsavoury wall of water, leaving a vast quantity of questionable debris in its wake. Slightly crazy, or just a regular citizen of Mumbai.

There’s an unquestionable and infectious joy that fills the people of this city when the monsoon hits. And it’s not just because it abates the punishing summer heat. In just a matter of hours after the first showers, the uncomfortable swelter retreats like the undertow of that violent surge, and a dewy, welcome freshness fills the air. But this is just physical. Inside the heart of a Mumbaikar, something shifts. A new temperament and equilibrium, perhaps a whole new set of rules to live by, comes into play.
