I&rsquo;m parked in a remote pullout on Forest Road 75 in Monongahela National Forest, West Virginia. At this point, I&rsquo;m only about a mile from the Dolly Sods plateau, which runs parallel to the road; the crest of the range is my destination on this early morning. It&rsquo;s still dark and utterly still as I set off down a game trail. There&rsquo;s a sense of discovery to these dawn hikes that always gives me a thrill: I never know what the sunrise will look like and feel like until it sweeps me up.</p><p id="3" style="text-align: justify;">The first hint of light begins to spill through the trees as the game trail vanishes and I start to bushwhack. With the sun come the birds, starting up a chorus all around me. I&rsquo;m just beginning to make out the yellow of the birch leaves when I emerge from the trees at my destination. A granite ledge, facing directly east into the rising sun, glows white and pale gray against fire-red blueberry and huckleberry bushes. Below me the forest drops away into green and gold hills that roll to the horizon, silent but for drifting birdsong. Everything has come together this morning: The location is perfect, the light even better, and my camera is ready. Taking a deep breath of crisp fall air, I put my eye to the viewfinder and ready my first shot.</p>
