Google’s Pixel phones, previously a mission to locate, are here in SA. How do they stack up against the established order?

Google’s Pixel 5, unlike most flagships, isn’t a weighty slab of glass. It feels dainty, weighing in at just 150grams. The rear panel (see below) feels almost novel and the 6in hole-punched 90Hz OLED front display presents an attractive picture. There’s a simplicity of design that carries through to the rest of the handset.

And that applies to the internals as well. Google’s skipped the 8-series processors from Qualcomm here, in favour of a Snapdragon 765G that, paired with 8GB of RAM, keeps the Pixel 5 ticking over speedily. You’re not going to notice much lag at all.
