The fold in our stars

At a cool ₹1,49,999, Samsung’s Fold 3 isn’t messing around. Is it just an expensive gimmick though?

Foldable screens were long overdue, in fact I’m surprised it took so long to come to fruition what with the LG G Flex that launched way back in 2013! But are foldable display devices like the Fold 3 ready to go mainstream? Well, not in 2021 at least, and the sheer lack of them (and the crazy price tag) is proof enough as of now. The Samsung Flip 3 retails for ₹84,999, but it’s also half the phone the Fold 3 is... quite literally.

So should you cough up a kidney or two and throw in an esophagus too? The answer to that isn’t very straightforward. The reactions to the Fold 3 go from ‘Oh Wow’ to ‘Oh yeh, it’s that foldable one isn’t it? Cool.’ The point is that the entire charm of the folding bit is short-lived. So, if you’re buying it to make a statement, it’ll be for a short time. The trade off? You end up with a phone that looks like a dusty, grime sandwich at the end of the day. But with our time with the Fold 3, we kind of learned to live with it...

Heavy hitter

The Fold 3 weighs a cool 271g and extensive use makes your wrists hurt! It is the first thing you will notice and probably the number one reason you wouldn’t want to live with it. At 67mm wide in its folded form, it’s ergonomically fine to handle but be ready for a thick unwanted bulge in your pockets.
