The chassis has consistently played a key role in the future of the automobile. End customers want a dynamic driving experience without forgoing dependability. However, at the same time, automated functions increase demand for comfort, which car manufacturers and suppliers must in turn satisfy. Individual components can no longer satisfy these varied tasks alone. ZF therefore relies on the optimised combination of chassis systems.

CONCEPT AND COMPONENTS

ZF formed its own Vehicle Motion Control strategy and research field, which integrates smart chassis and drive components as well as intelligent mechatronics and completely networked chassis systems. Its potential is demonstrated by the group’s newly-developed innovation vehicle. The vehicle features a predictive passenger car concept that maintains full control over all longitudinal, transverse, and vertical movements. Depending on the driving situation, this increases security and occupant comfort, and also relieves the driver, especially in city traffic.

The technical basis for these features lies in the intelligent combination of various active and semi-active systems that predictively identify and iron out adverse movements of the vehicle body. A specially developed regulation algorithm forms the central switchboard for this smart chassis technology, which links and coordinates all active and semi-active actuators. It can be installed in a central control unit as well as in individual system domains.

The ZF regulation algorithm receives sensor and status signals from the individual components, reconciles them with each other, and then formulates cohesive instructions accordingly. The greatest challenge was posed by the transmission ratio of the signals issued by the individual components. As a result, calibration of the interfaces was time-intensive. Communication between the individual components in the innovation vehicle is handled by the existing CAN bus system, a private CAN that links the newly-installed components, and Ethernet CAN connections.

In 2011, the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) presented an evaluation system for headlamps that can objectively assess the quality of illumination and glare limitation. New light sources like LEDs and lighting functions (glare-free high beam, partial high beam) have been available for several years, so that an extension of the proven CIE method is necessary, which takes into account, among other things, changed switch-on and service lives of new lighting functions and represents a generally understandable evaluation system. An evaluation system presented in the following by the Technische Uni versität Darmstadt, which was developed by an encompassing expert commission, is intended to provide representative data and enable an objective evaluation of headlamp performance.
