Summer arrival MATT DOHERTY admits, on a personal level, it’s been a frustrating start to his Spurs career, but the full-back believes he is starting to come into his own now and is looking to kick on in the rest of our campaign.
Liam Carson

Reflecting on the first six months of his Spurs career, MattDoherty admits it’s been a ‘tough start’ to life for him in north London, but the defender feels he has turned a corner in recent weeks and that there is a lot more to come from him as we head towards the business end of the season.

Arriving from Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer, Matt joined the Club on the back of two standout Premier League campaigns with the West Midlands side in which he helped them to back-to-back seventh-place finishes as well as qualification for the 2019/20 Europa League – their first venture into European football for 29 years. Their subsequent journey on the continent saw them reach the quarter-finals of the competition, which was the furthest they had progressed in Europe since finishing as runners-up to us in the 1972 UEFA Cup Final.

Across those two seasons alone, the full-back showcased his dependability as he played 95 games for Wolves; add to that the nine caps he earned for the Republic of Ireland over that period, and it was more than a century of games in just over two years.

Incredibly, in that time, the defender was also involved in 31 goals. He was flying at Molineux and had certainly deserved it considering the work he had put in to reach England’s top flight.

Having joined Wanderers during their last spell as a Premier League side back in 2010 as an 18-year-old from Irish outfit Bohemians, Matt spent much of his first few years in England away from Wolverhampton with loan spells at Hibernian and Bury. By the time he returned in 2013, the men in gold were heading towards League One. It was only then that the full-back began to get his opportunity in the first team at Molineux, but he soon cemented his place as an integral part of their side and was a key figure in their ultimate ascent back to the top flight, which they achieved in May, 2018.
