As we welcome home the Spurs faithful this evening, HEUNG-MIN SON reflects on a long and winding season ahead of our final outing at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this term.

SQUAD GOALS

Heung-Min Son has registered his best-ever goalscoring campaign for us this year yet, if the team are not achieving on the pitch, that piece of personal success means little to him.

In our colours this term Sonny has excelled, reaching levels we have not seen before. In finding the target on our recent trip to Leeds United, the South Korean made it 22 goals in all competitions for himself this season with a fine finish midway through the first half. That strike edged him past his previous best of 21, which he recorded in the 2016/17 campaign.

Add to that the assists he has registered in all competitions this year and, in terms of goal contributions, it also becomes his best season for us yet – he had been involved in 39 goals ahead of Sunday’s encounter with Wolves. Meanwhile, he has also recorded 10-plus goals and assists in the Premier League for the second consecutive season – he is the first Spurs player in the history of the competition to have managed that in multiple campaigns. Yet, while of course he has pride in his personal achievements, those records are just numbers to him and are of no importance if the team is not succeeding.

This year has been one of many ups and downs for us on the pitch. What had begun as a campaign with promise in both performances and results as we rose to the summit of the Premier League table in the late autumn, has since ebbed and flowed. A turbulent winter period saw us slip outside of the Champions League places, while disappointing results in the FA Cup and Europa League, as well as defeat in the Carabao Cup Final, will see us end the year without silverware.
