While there’s still a lot to focus on at club level, with only a few weeks to go, the countdown to this summer’s World Cup in Russia is on! Ahead of the showpiece tournament, BILLY SHAW chats to members of our current squad who have helped their respective nations qualify over the last two years to find out about their memories of past World Cups and their predictions for 2018. The series continues tonight with England left-back DANNY ROSE…

Road To Russia

What was the first World Cup you can remember watching?

France ’98 is the first one I remember. I was only just coming up to eight then but I recall watching the England-Argentina game at home with my mum when David Beckham got sent off and Michael Owen scored ‘that’ goal.

Who were the stars that year?

Denilson and Ronaldo for Brazil, Owen and Beckham, who were obviously two of the stars for England, and Emmanuel Petit for France – they’re the ones that stick out. I remember Petit scoring the third goal for France when they beat Brazil 3-0 in the final.

Have you ever been to a World Cup match as a supporter?

I’ve never been but it’s something I’d like to do when I retire from football.

If there was one World Cup game in history that you could have gone to, which one would it be and why?
