James Niggemeyer Chooses Creek Channels, Points, and Rocky Banks in Cold Weather.
James Niggemeyer’s “to do” list for Winter Bass Fishing is a short one. The Pro looks for Vertical Structure that Changes the Bottom Depth, he Checks that Structure for Possible Vegetation Cover and he Slows his Lure Presentation. It’s a strategy that has served him well during his career as both a Professional Tournament Angler as well as a Guide on Lake Fork, Texas.
“In Cold Weather, Bass really Gravitate to Vertical Structure, which allows them to easily and quickly Move Up and Down in the Water Column if the Water Temperature Changes, rather than travel a long distance to find agreeable conditions,” explains Niggemeyer. “The Ideal Vertical Structure is a Steep-Sided Creek Channel or a Point that Drops Straight Down, but the actual amount of Depth Change does not have to be that great. I have caught a lot of Winter Bass where the Depth Change was Five Feet or less.”

Former Bassmaster Classic Champion Alton Jones ranks Winter as one of his favorite seasons of the year to catch Bass, because he can literally fish Top to Bottom with two of his favorite lures, Surface Plugs and Deep Diving Crankbaits.
Organization Means Everything
While fishing from a Kayak offers many advantages over angling from a boat, Copious Storage Space is not among them, which means a smart Kayak angler has a well-thought plan before venturing onto the water.

Fine Tuning Your Spinnerbait Selection
Among his contemporaries, Matt Herren has long been considered one of the best Spinner bait Fishermen competing on the Bass master ® Elite Series, but all are surprised to learn the Pro actually keeps very few of the popular blade-type lures in his boat. Instead, Herren carries boxes of Spinner bait Components, including Blades, Skirts, and Heads, and Makes his lures on the water as he needs them. “I wouldn’t have enough room in my boat to carry all the different Spinner baits I might want during a tournament,” laughs Herren, “so I keep Boxes of Parts in Different Colors and Weights and put them together as the Conditions Dictate. It only takes a minute or so to make one, so I’m really not losing much time at all, and I can have exactly what I want.”
