The last three winners of the Champions League trophy have been Spanish teams, with Real Madrid winning it in 2014 and 2016, while Barcelona won the trophy in 2015. What is also relevant is that in two of those three finals the losing finalist have also come from Spain with Atletico Madrid losing to their city rivals Real Madrid on both occasions. In addition, the Europa League for the last three seasons has also been won by a Spanish team, with Sevilla running out winners three years in a row. And Obviously the UEFA super cup has also been in the hands of Spanish clubs.

The club world cup has indeed landed in the hands of Spanish clubs making it not only the domination in Europe but also of the world football at club level. In fact the Spanish teams have had the most quarter finalists in the Champions League with 15 than any other country in the league in the last five years.

The dominance of Spanish teams was once again evident in the last round of Champions league matches with Barcelona knocking out Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid knocking out Napoli while Atletico Madrid easily saw off Bayer Leverkusen. On the flip side of things Sevilla were knocked by Leicester City who are currently in the bottom half of the Premier League.

Yes, there have been other teams as well but domestically over the last decade or so it has been all about the trio of Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid. Last team apart from these to win the La Liga was Valencia back in the 2003-04 season while Sevilla were the last team outside of the big three to win Copa Del Rey in 2010.

It is truly remarkable that in a country like Spain which is bursting with prodigious talent that winners can come from a limited number of teams. But that is the case and these three clubs have indeed been rampant in their quest for trophies and have not left any stone unturned.

One of the reasons as to why these three teams have been doing so good is the caliber of the players that they have. Every year we look at the list of players that come out for Ballon d’Or and the players that win or are in the final three are from either Los Blancos or La Blaugrana. One would have to go back quite back in time to find a player that won the award that wasn’t from these clubs. Even the players that are not shortlisted are some of the best in the world. Players for whom either world records have been broken or could well be broken in the coming years.
