Thembinkosi Lorch’s performances last term were outstanding for the whole season. In the PSL, he scored nine goals and picked up five assists. He was Orlando Pirates’ top goalscorer and joint-second in the league scoring charts behind only Black Leopards’ Mwape Musonda. Across all competitions, he scored 15 goals with two goals scored in the CAF Champions League group stages and four in the Telkom Knockout. In all, he made 26 league appearances, starting 23 of those games and playing a total of 1 989 minutes. That means he scored a goal every 221 minutes on the pitch.
Shooting: Last season, Lorch was taking 2.45 shots per 90 minutes on the pitch and hitting the target with a highly impressive 53% of his attempts. This season he is taking 2.07 shots per 90 minutes he spends on the pitch, with 38% hitting the target. This represents a small drop, but the more alarming thing has been his shot positions. He has taken one shot from the halfway line and two from the right byline despite having better-placed teammates in the box. If we take those shots out of the equation, his number of realistic goal attempts is lower – no wonder he is yet to score.
Crossing: Lorch delivered a lot of balls from wide last season. Often, he would make runs from the middle into the channels behind the opposition’s left back, then whip in a cross. He averaged 4.2 open play crosses per 90 minutes in 2018/19, with 26% finding a teammate. This season he is delivering 5.9 t imes from wide, but only 17% are finding an Orlando Pirates shirt. Those are very high numbers and perhaps he is crossing too much out of desperation when Bucs have been struggling to score. For example, he delivered eight crosses against each of Golden Arrows and Chippa United.

Cut Lehlohonolo Seema’s skin andhe’ll probably bleed green andwhite – such has been the man’s loyalty to Bloemfontein Celtic. Born and bred in neighbouring Lesotho, the Mangaung outfit is a club that’s always had a pull factor on him. The next step was to become an assistant, a job he performed with aplomb, before being called on to take the hotseat together with John Maduka after the departure of Steve Komphela at the tail end of 2018. Much against general expectation, the duo has done fairly well, if Celtic’s off-field troubles of the recent past are to be taken into consideration. Soccer Laduma’s Beaver Nazo sat down with Seema to discuss this, that, and the other.

Before signing for Mamelodi Sundowns last season,Lyle Lakay knew that he would be used as a leftback and not in his preferred left wing position, something that he surprisingly did not have a problem with.
