Incognito out after surgery
Silver & Black Illustrated|January 2021
Richie Incognito’s season officially ended after the veteran offensive lineman underwent foot surgery in late November. It also might have signaled the end of Incognito’s stay in Las Vegas.

Signed to a $14 million, two-year extension following the 2019 season when he was named a Pro Bowl alternate, Incognito played in only two games this season before leaving the game against the New Orleans Saints with an Achilles injury that had been bothering him for at least a week.

Both Incognito and the Raiders were hopeful that the left guard would be able to get back on the field at some point but those hopes were dashed when head coach Jon Gruden informed reporters that Incognito underwent season-ending surgery.

“I hate to admit it but we’ve tried everything we can,” Gruden said. “Richie’s tried everything he can to get back on the field. His season is over.”

Speculation quickly turned to Incognito’s future with the Raiders, and for good reason.

Incognito will be 38 in July and has had health issues his entire time in silver and black. He missed two games in 2019 due to an ankle injury after sitting out the first two games of that season while serving an NFL suspension for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.

Gruden feeling the heat?

“I know there is a big bull’s-eye on my chest, certainly. If the people want to use that as an incentive, then so be it. I worked for Al Davis in 1998. That was pressure. I was 34 years old. I’ve dealt with pressure before. I don’t really feel pressure. I love the excitement and thrill of competing, and I can’t worry about things I can’t control in that regard. I know people will want to step on me and beat me, and that is just the way this league is.”
