The Big 5 Cycling Colleges

The EVOLUTION of BMX

There is no denying that BMX has evolved over the past 50 years. Things have changed; and contrary to what some might argue - we truly believe things have changed for the better. In our sport, being “Factory” (getting that all-expenses paid ride to race at a bunch of Nationals) used to be the ultimate goal in BMX racing. These days, one might say that being “Collegiate” is the new ultimate experience for riders. In these times of fewer factory sponsorships, College scholarships to race BMX (along with competing in other cycling disciplines) is fast becoming every kid’s dream scenario. Just imagine - you not only get an all-expense paid ride to race all types of bicycles, but you also get a free (or heavily discounted) opportunity to attend College and get a degree that will last you a lifetime. While it seemed impressive in the 80’s and 90’s to see that top Factory Pro buying a house or driving a Porsche, these days seeing a Pro graduating with a major degree and career path - while getting to race on the College’s dime, should be equally, if not more, awesome.

The 2019 USAC COLLEGIATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

In DeSoto, Texas - at this year’s Super Nationals, the USA Cycling Collegiate Championships was one of the most closely contested Collegiate races ever. While the usual dominators - Marian University, came out on top (as they have for the past seven years), it was a tight nail-biter until the very end. Colorado’s CMU was hot on Marian’s tail, much in thanks to Collin Hudson winning Collegiate Men both days, who now ripped the patriotic sleeve off of Lindsey-Wilson’s Dustin Hammond.

When you roll into the local Quiktrip and one of Tucson’s finest looks at your shirt and asks if you know Corben Sharrah, you can only be in one city in America. Often coined as the loudest city in BMX, it doesn’t matter if there is a single fan or a gaggle of Tucsonans, they know how to bring the energy.

With all of the uncertainty in event planning this year, it was not a huge surprise that the DK Bicycles North East Gold Cup Finals shifted locations somewhat last minute. We were very lucky to have it and at a great location, Akron BMX in Akron, Ohio. The Big Red Truck was last here for the 2018 North East Gold Cup Finals, and the track is located in a pretty incredible location.
