Double Cross Borderline Nationals
PULL Magazine|August 2017

Once again BMX Canada brings it’s National Series race, stop #3 for western Canada, back to Langley BMX, literally minutes from the Canada/USA border. It’s no wonder this race is coined the Borderline Nationals.

Situated under hydro power lines it can easily be labeled as the High Voltage Nationals since there’s definitely a buzz you can feel. As one of Canada’s oldest tracks and local to yours truly, it was a pleasure to be in my own back yard for this historic Canada Day (150 years old) long weekend.

Martyn Boulter of Monster Bike Supply, and Langley BMX’s club president, really has a great crew of execs that spent countless weeks prepping the facility with new additions and upgrades. While the track mostly remained unchanged since their last National in 2015, it still proved to be an exciting course with the long sweeper first corner and dirt corners which made for some exciting race action, to say the least.

Always a fierce rivalry are two young girls in the 8 year old class. Islanders ‘Turbo’ Tiffany Brosius and Rift Canada’s Piper Graaten always seem to have great sprint battles to get things going. While Brosius had the power to lead the group on both days, it was Graaten’s perfect corner executions that pulled her past the Monster Bike Supply’s ‘lil’ Turbo Tiffany. Saturday’s was an inside pass on the last corner, and Sunday’s almost identical move happened in corner 2. Graaten is definitely on a streak, as she is the current leader for National #1 girl going into the Worlds break.

If there is one good thing about this year’s Covid closures of states and counties, it is that tracks that might not normally have gotten a shot at hosting a National or Gold Cup event, were now given that opportunity.

When you roll into the local Quiktrip and one of Tucson’s finest looks at your shirt and asks if you know Corben Sharrah, you can only be in one city in America. Often coined as the loudest city in BMX, it doesn’t matter if there is a single fan or a gaggle of Tucsonans, they know how to bring the energy.

With all of the uncertainty in event planning this year, it was not a huge surprise that the DK Bicycles North East Gold Cup Finals shifted locations somewhat last minute. We were very lucky to have it and at a great location, Akron BMX in Akron, Ohio. The Big Red Truck was last here for the 2018 North East Gold Cup Finals, and the track is located in a pretty incredible location.
