The cricket world has been shaken. There is mayhem on social media. AB De Villiers, arguably one of the greatest modern day batsmen, has bid adieu to international cricket. The 34-year-old South African announced his retirement last night in a press conference where he said he has had enough and wants to go out while he is still playing his best cricket.
The decision has expectedly stunned the cricketing world. No other cricketer in recent times has commanded as much love, respect and adoration as De Villiers has had over the years. He was an once-in-a-lifetime cricketer and the cricketing world has been left poorer without his magnificent presence in it.
While everyone has been busy bemoaning ABD’s sudden exit from international cricket, if one had followed his career closely these past few years, they would have known that this was coming and wasn’t altogether surprising.
“It’s not about earning more somewhere else, it’s about running out of gas and feeling that it is the right time to move on. Everything comes to an end,” is what De Villiers said in the press conference. And that statement does give us some indication as to why this champion cricketer would have retired.
