Carthy rides on to Giro podium despite setbacks

Despite losing key members of his team and time during the Giro d’Italia’s first weeks, Hugh Carthy and his EF team are confident he can keep his podium spot.

Carthy entered the race’s second rest day 1.19 off the lead of pink jersey wearer Egan Bernal and in third position on GC.

Speaking to Cycling Weekly on Sunday evening, EF sports director Tom Southam said: “For sure he can get onto the podium.”

Carthy went on to ride strongly on Monday’s shortened mountain stage, hauling himself into third spot even as he lost time to Bernal.

When asked about the potential to go for the win Southam replied: “The gaps are what they are but they can be eroded pretty quickly in this final week.”
