‘Awards come with success, winning'

Q: Tre White has spoken about the special bond he has with you as a result of being the first draft pick under your watch, as well as the pressure and responsibility that comes with being in that position. What do you say about that and the player that he’s become?

SM: It’s fun to watch. It brings a lot of joy to me. Just looking at it, to watch what he’s been able to do, it’s no surprise honestly. We felt strongly obviously about him with our first pick not only on the field, but off the field. As I’ve mentioned before, what’s really cool to watch is how a young man who was signed to a new contract, to me, has even taken his work ethic up a notch. I think that’s very uncommon in our world. Yeah, I’ve got a special bond with Tre and I love him, I love his family. He’s just been nothing but what we expected and even more so since he’s gotten here in every way. So I really appreciate that about him.

Q: With the new rules in regards to when assistants can interview for head coaching jobs, what are your thoughts on that and just from your experiences is there a better time to do that?

SM: The key is limiting and eliminating distractions and all that type of noise. We’re going through, like with other things, making decisions that are important this time of year and so we got that memo and we’re going to do it when it’s right for our football team. We certainly understand the situation and how important those opportunities are for some of our guys and we’re really proud of them for it, but at the end of the day we’ve got to do what’s best for the Buffalo Bills. So we’ll handle that internally.

Dak Prescott, Cowboys 6-2 • 235 pounds • 27 years old A solid starter who has a nice TD-INT ratio over his first five seasons (104-40), Prescott is an accurate thrower and very mobile. However, he’s coming off a compound fracture and dislocation of his right ankle, so it remains to be seen if this will impact his game moving forward.

Hunter Henry, Chargers 6-5 • 250 pounds • 29 years old A very talented player, Henry has had issues staying healthy, unable to complete an NFL season, including missing the entire 2018 season with a torn ACL. But when healthy, he’s a terrific all-around tight end who really connected with Justin Herbert in 2020 with 60 catches. Henry is very good at finding holes in zone coverage.
