The New Number One

Once in a while, a goalie with just a little bit of pro experience leads their team to a Stanley Cup championship and the hockey world looks on in awe, but until this season, no rookie had ever managed to accomplish the feat twice in a row - until Matt Murray of the Pittsburgh Penguins made it happen.

This year, Murray was a hot property in the hobby and was thrust into the starting role in net for the Pens. As speculation flew about regarding the future of his crease partner Marc-Andre Fleury, he looked solid over 49 appearances, setting a franchise for most wins by a rookie goaltender with 32. He still qualified as a freshman as he only played 13 regular season games the previous year. Thanks to ranking among the league leaders in wins, save percentage, and shutouts, he was named to the NHL’s All-Rookie Team as well.
