Giroux Goes Digital

With Topps returning to the hockey card market at the beginning of this season through its digital NHL Skate app, the company decided on Philadelphia Flyers veteran forward Claude Giroux as its cover athlete. The decision has proven to be a smart one as Giroux is once again ranked among the top scorers in the league and is helping the Flyers stay competitive within the tight Metropolitan Division. He recently spoke with Beckett Hockey about his involvement with the app and why he agreed to represent it.

“When they came to me, I was pretty intrigued by the idea of being digital and I think it’s going to be great. When I was a kid, I was collecting cards and from a small town, so we didn’t have much about the NHL, so it was a great way to be part of the NHL, or just hockey. This idea here is pretty entertaining.”

On December 9, Topps paid him a visit at the team’s practice facility and conducted the first-ever digital hockey card signing.

“Today is actually my first time and you can actually see where the player actually writes his name,” he said. “Just the idea around it, I think that kids are really going to like it and my friend’s been talking about it, too, so it’s going to be pretty fun.”

Giroux noted that he enjoys giving out autographs to fans.
