The right and wrong way collectors use painters tape

Dave Sliepka
Tools Of The Trade

Many of you are already well versed in the hobby uses of Painters Tape. Some of you may have had packages arrive, with some weird blue tape on it, and wondered what that was. In either case, we have the answers, and some tips on how to get the best use out of a roll of painter’s tape.

WHAT IS PAINTERS TAPE

If you didn’t already know, painters tape is that low-stick tape that you use to make clean lines when you paint. Also sold as Frog Tape, it can be quickly and easily removed without damaging the wall surface, or leaving a sticky residue behind. You should already be able to see where this can apply in our hobby.

Let’s get this on the record right now, cellophane tape (AKA invisible tape, AKA Scotch tape) has NO business being anywhere near your trading cards. And this especially includes over the open edge of a top load holder. If you are doing it now, STOP IT. If you are buying cards from a dealer who does it, tell them to STOP IT! It’s not good for the card, nor the holder.

Junk Wax Era 1988 Score

But the interest in baseball cards would reach a fever pitch by 1988, which would mark the first year since 1981 that a new manufacturer would enter the fold.
