REINED IN

Our weekend warrior had been chomping at the bit to play his part in an annual pantomime horse race. Sadly, Covid had other ideas…
MARTYN BRUNT
REINED IN

This isn’t the column I’d intended to write this month. I’d meant to regale you with tales of my latest race which, in my quest to bring you ever more entertaining feats of athletic endeavour, promised to be one of the more unusual affairs I have become involved in.

Unfortunately, due to circumstances that’ll become clear, the race has been postponed until next year, leaving me with more nervous anticipation than that bloke who shoved an unexploded WW2 bomb up his backside.

The reason for my excitement is that the race I was about to do was none other than the 11th London Pantomime Horse Race, a frantic gallop around Greenwich from King William Walk to Royal Hill via half a dozen pubs, with some jumps and other obstacles thrown in for good measure.

For those of you unfamiliar with this unique event, around 100 teams of two do battle along London’s mean streets dressed in pantomime horse costumes, which are good for ‘it’s behind you’ banter but bad for sprinting.
