The Ishvara is everywhere. Swami Vivekananda called society as Virat and asked us to worship the Virat. What does it mean? I feel we should serve and be respectful to the society and such abundance knowledge we get from it. Three very brief incidents but that are etched in my memory I would share where I got wisdom from Virat. In all the three incidents, I do not remember the names of the persons concerned, but what they incidentally taught me is not forgotten.
Arun Jyoti camp was in Kharsang, Arunachal Pradesh. Around 40 youth of the district had come for 5 days residential camp. Some village elders used to visit or participate in Bhajan or some sessions. One day a person came and attended a Swadhyay session. After that he was talking with me for some time. While talking he made one remark. ‘I do not understand what is this Dharma, Dharma? Muslim Dharma, Hindu Dharma, Christian Dharma! There are not so many Dharmas at all. Dharma is only one and that is to do good work wherever you are. Aap jahan hai vahan achcha kam karna. This is what I know the meaning of Dharma. From where all these so many Dharmas came?’
What a great truth he told me in such a simple language! As the years passed, I realized how true it is. Dharma is beyond sect, a specific god or dogmas. In whatever situation, place, with whatever people you are, do your best, in the interest of all. The educated would go on discussing, would write big books on this and yet may not be able to tell pinpointedly what is Dharma.

When I was Principal in Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya at Kanyakumari, I had made it a point to go to all the classes in a week. I used to take ‘moral science’ classes. Whatever is to be told to children to mould them and develop proper attitude and good habits in them I used to tell through stories. After experimenting with various suggested courses, I came to the conclusion that a story can be the most effective tool. So, I made my plan that in each class a specific great principle of our culture should be communicated through suitable stories.

The room in Sri Ramakrishna Ashrama in Sasthamangalam appears small but bears all marks of subtle nobility. There are pictures of the divine trio – Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada, and Swami Vivekananda – on the walls as well as some memorabilia and books on a bed. A frail woman in her mid-eighties sits in a corner chair, her eyes faintly lighting up as she smiles in welcome.

Our search can get a halt when we come across a one hundred twenty one years old ‘Plague Manifesto’ written by the warrior sanyasi Swami Vivekananda during the Bengal Plague in 1898.
