OBED NATÁN CHIC ITZEP

We have just come through another Christmas season. The beautiful story we remember each year is not make-believe; it started in God’s mind. This story completely changed the world! The story was revealed through prophets and angels and ultimately through a young girl. The Holy Spirit told the prophet Isaiah part of the story: “Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14).

This part of the story in Isaiah gives us three facts:

1) A virgin shall conceive. She would be a woman who was at the appropriate age to marry but she would not have known any man. How could she conceive? The beautiful story would solve the plot twist. The Holy Spirit would come upon her and the power of the Highest would overshadow her. The Scriptures assert that Mary found favor with God (Luke 1:30, 35). Through Mary’s virginity, the Lord would show us His might and supremacy.

2) She shall bear a son. This is the main point of the story. The virgin would give birth to the Holy One who would also be called the Son of God. “That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world” (John 1:9). In this prophetic expression, the words “and she shall bear a son” stand out; in other words, it clearly tells who would carry out the perfect will of God and be the pivotal characters in this beautiful story.

3) She shall call his name Immanuel. The presence of God would descend to the world in the second Person of the Trinity, the Word, our Jesus. The Scriptures record:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the

SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP - PRAYERFUL LEADERSHIP

Look at the first two words in this article’s title, “Spiritual Leadership.” Now replace the word “spiritual” with any word that denotes effective Christian leadership—authentic leadership, compassionate leadership, visionary leadership, anointed leadership, fruitful leadership, compelling leadership, servant leadership, etc. This simple exercise reminds us that consistent, fervent prayer is essential to effective spiritual leadership.

Local Church Outreach 2020

As the coronavirus made headlines near the beginning of 2020, I heard an amazing message of compassion and care concerning early Christians running into the plague to minister with kindness to make a difference in the lives of those who were sick and dying. They were willing to move to ministry, even when it threatened their own lives. The message contained a powerful illustration of how those of us who follow the teachings of Christ respond in counter-culture ways to minister to those who are suffering and in need.

Prayer People

The Bible tells us to pray with all kinds of prayer (Ephesians 6:18). But not every kind of prayer is effective prayer. Sometimes, our prayers resemble a flea-market auction. We barter. We negotiate. We up the bid. We say, “I’ll become a missionary if you’ll heal me, God!” Or, “I need more money, more money, more money—I’ll tithe 15 percent!”

Consider Your Ways

When my wife and I first got married, we knew very little about managing money. We certainly did not pay attention to the verse found in Proverbs 22:7 that says, “The rich rules over the poor, And the borrower is servant to the lender” (NKJV).
