October 8, 2018, was the day we discovered that we were finally pregnant.

My wife didn’t really like the word “finally,” coming from four years and six months of waiting, filled with comments from people like, “You still don’t have a baby?” “Have you already had your checkup?” Or, “Is someone sick?” Then they compare us to those who had a baby immediately or offer advice as if they were fertility gurus. I know most people mean well, but there are better ways to encourage those who are waiting for their miracle, just like how we need to learn not to ask our single friends about why they still don’t have a boyfriend or girlfriend.

But that morning, my world was rocked in an exciting way when I learned that I am now a dad! Oh, oh . . . check the funds . . . is it enough for hospitalization? What will our baby need when he or she is born? And so on.

Fast forward. Anya was born. And everything was never the same again.

A few months later, The Feast Makati District invited me to give a message at their monthly men’s gathering. They asked me to share how it feels to be a first-time father.
